Rue and Charlotte were stood to attention, hands on head facing the wall, just outside Dr Browning’s study when he arrived. He glowered at the hapless pair before swishing through his door and slamming it behind him. The noise made the two girls jump out of their skins and they surreptitiously exchanged glances before going back to attention and staring at the plain grey wall outside Dr Browning’s scary study. The girls got increasingly more fidgety as the time dragged by, waiting for the sword of Damocles to fall.

Eventually the study door was snatched open and Dr Browning stood in the doorway looking menacing and somehow even more terrifying than he had been as he briskly marched the two unfortunate girls towards his study.

“Inside! Now! “ Dr Browning ordered, his crisp Received Pronunciation English accent being even more noticeable than usual. Charlotte and Rue nervously entered the lion’s den and stood to attention; exactly 18 inches from the large oak leather topped desk as regulations dictated. Dr. Browning walked back around to his chair and, placing the cane on the desktop, sat down in his chair.

“I will not waste words on the pair of you as you have both been here long enough to know this behaviour is unacceptable. Just when I think that the Upper Removes poor choices and foolishness cannot get any worse this shambles then occurs.” Rue looked down at her feet and shuffled them uncomfortably.

“Stop that immediately Ruth-Ann Stephens! Eyes front and centre, !” Rue snapped back to attention and looked at the wall behind Dr Browning as Academy protocol dictated. “This appalling behaviour has got to stop! I am not prepared to put up with this disgusting lack of discipline one moment longer!” Dr Browning glared at the girls, daring them to attempt to come up with some inadequate excuse as to why they had been fighting in the first place. Charlotte swallowed hard before licking her lips to reply. Dr Browning held up his large hand. “No Miss Harrison, I am not interested in what pathetic reason caused the two of you to be brawling like a couple of uneducated Oiks. “( look it up )

Charlotte swallowed again not sure what Dr Browning wanted from her. Her eyes gave a quick flick over to check Rue was ok and was rewarded by a bellow.

“Charlotte Louise Harrison, I will not tell you again! If you so much as twitch, your near future will find yourself on parade for the next 72 hours, in full uniform with a dozen stripes for each infraction.” Charlotte’s body snapped to a more professional attitude at once and inwardly felt sick at the threat, which Charlotte was sure would not be an idle one.

Dr Browning glared at the students, for what seemed like another eternal moment, before reaching a conclusion as what to do with the two members of the Upper Remove. He picked up his cane and, with a decisiveness well known within the school, devised a new punishment that would both punish and deter others from behaving such. Dr Browning stood and took in the state of each cadet’s uniform and was appalled.

“Hold your skirts up to your waists”, Dr Browning ordered whilst walking behind the pair. Clueless, the girls did as they were told, perplexed but obedient. Quick as a flash He delivered 6 lightning strikes of the cane across the tops of the back of first Rue’s, then Charlotte’s thighs, branding them with his displeasure.

“I expect you both in fully repaired and immaculate uniform at zero six-thirty on Friday morning on the cadet parade ground where we will discuss this matter further. You are dismissed.” With disdain, Dr. Browning flung down the cane onto the edge of his desk and held the door open for the two stunned cadets, who did their best to march as crisply as they could with searing lines crisscrossing the backs of their legs. The burning stripes fighting with their earlier cane cuts as to which was more painful.

After being dismissed, Charlotte and Rue were unsure whether to hobble back to Applied Chemistry, or go to the girls’ loos for a bit of a sob and applying cold wet paper towels on their branded skin. The lure of the cold water won out and the two friends, their disagreement forgotten, went to the closest girls loos and cooing sympathetically at each other’s cuts, helped the other to soothe their fiery slashes; the six they had got in the Chemistry lab almost forgotten, their friendship restored to pre Applied Chemistry levels, the argument completely lost amongst subsequent events.
